Apheresis Donors Honored at Special Reception

There’s a special group of blood donors at Blood Bank of Alaska who give with dauntless loyalty. They devote themselves to saving the lives of Alaskans with cancer, heart disease, trauma and severe burns.

On Feb. 12, Blood Bank of Alaska held a special reception to honor the most dedicated Apheresis donors in the Anchorage and Mat-Su Valley areas.

"It makes me excited to see such a dedicated group of lifesavers all in one room," said Jack Williams, Blood Bank of Alaska CEO, who hosted the event.

In Apheresis donation an automated machine gathers plasma, platelets, and red cells from the blood while returning other blood components to the donor.

Blood Bank of Alaska awarded door prizes and certificates of recognition to more than 20 regular donors. The 22 most prolific donors of 2007 were also awarded $100 gift certificates courtesy of Allure Day Spa and Hair Design.

“Events like this are nice,” said Stuart Goering, a monthly Apheresis donor. “But it’s not really why you do it. You do it to help people.”

Blood Bank of Alaska relies on these dedicated donors to provide Alaskans with blood products at 24 hospitals statewide. While Apheresis donation takes longer than whole blood donation, many donors use the time as a personal break to watch a movie, read or catch up on rest.

You can schedule your Apheresis donation today, by calling Blood Bank of Alaska’s Apheresis line at 222-5619.
