What do the color codes mean?
- Code RED (Critical)
Less than a ONE day supply = less than 25% of target goal. Red
status means we are in a critical shortage of a particular blood
type. In this case, we have very few blood units on our shelves
to restock hospitals in case of emergencies. Elective surgeries
may have to be cancelled and/or we may have to import blood from
the Lower 48 states.
- Code YELLOW (Warning)
Less than a TWO day supply = less than 50% of target goal. When
we only have a two day supply of blood on our shelves, we are
on Yellow alert. This means we have blood readily available in
case of an emergency, but one trauma case situation calling for
a great deal of blood could place us in critical status.
- Code GREEN (Sufficient)
THREE or more day supply = greater than 50% of target goal. Our
goal is to have a three days' blood supply on our shelves. We
have a continual need for all blood types because blood is constantly
being used and needs to be replenished. Green is our "normal"
status, our constant state if we have no special needs. When we
are in this status, we are prepared to respond to medical crisis
as well as meet normal needs in Alaska.
