How do you motivate people to take time out of their day to donate blood?
Take them by the hand and lead them to the blood mobile. Ask leaders from the pulpit or platform to donate and to talk about it. Tell a story of one of our own who really needed blood and how it saved their life.
What do you feel is the most powerful tool for promoting blood drives?
Friendly and personal face-to-face contact!
What advice would you give to a ‘new’ blood drive coordinator?

If you get a chance, learn the ropes as an understudy/assistant to a successful coordinator before doing it on your own. If that's not possibly, try to at least learn what NOT to do from others! Sometimes just learning how to avoid shooting yourself in the foot is a very worthwhile lesson! My strategy was to inform and encourage the donor pool from every free way possible and to leverage my precious and constrained time by getting key people to help.

  • Free media examples: logins, posters in bathroom stalls, elevators, bulletin boards, newspaper, newsletter, etc.
  • Key people examples: senators, faculty, chapel speakers, deans, etc.

Additional Comments
Don't be afraid to ask people point blank to donate. They're adults. They can say No if they really want to. Go for it!
